Garraf, one of Sitges’ natural charms
Located to the south of Barcelona and with easy reach of Barcelona El Prat Airport, the comarca of El Garraf comprises six municipalities. Cubelles, Vilanova i La Geltrú, Sant Pere de Ribes and Sitges all have at least some coast and Canyelles and Olivella are situated in the mountainous interior. The Garraf is an extremely attractive part of Catalonia and definitely the best stretch of the coast within easy reach of Barcelona. The celebrated beach resort of Sitges is obviously the main attraction but Vilanova i La Geltrú, the comarca capital, is also lovely and is definitely worth visit.
The harsh environmental conditions of the Garraf (high insolation, lack of water, sparse vegetation and extremely abrupt relief) doesn’t let the area have rich flora. Instead, for this same reason, the original wildlife that lives there, has adapted to these particular conditions. In addition, the inhospitality of these mountains has allowed some endangered species to live there, such as the falcon and the Bonelli’s eagle, and other birds of prey. The coastal side of the massif also provides an opportunity for marine birds to survive.
The confluence of ecological environments that occur in solid transition between the oak and holm oak maquis and palmito- are also reflected in the herpetological (very sensitive to these changes) wildlife, so we can also find species of thermophilic nature and North African origin, as the horseshoe snake and the viper, along with other Central European animals, such as the salamander.
Finally, the great development of the karstic system has allowed the formation of an interesting cave life, to the point that we can find unique endemic species in the world.
The short distance that separates the massif of the city of Barcelona is contributing to increasing scientific interest, since it facilitates its study. Furthermore, this same proximity accentuates the risk of degradation and therefore requires more effort preserve the area.
What’s more, the Garraf Massif provides some spectacular views down to the sea, and the nature reserves of Garraf, Olèrdola and El Foix provide a pleasant contrast to the more famous beach resorts. Obviously, the coastal resorts are well-served by the local railway service from Barcelona but if you want to really explore El Garraf and the neighbouring comarques it is well worth hiring a car and heading off on your own.
If you are a nature lover this is the perfect place to go hiking besides the coastline. The beautiful views from the cliffs will make you fall in love the Mediterranean without doubt. Sitges is a great holiday destination for both nature and city lovers. It’s proximity to Barcelona and it’s vivid nightlife are just some of the many charms of this little but energetic town.
